Going heavy on isolation lifts (curls, lat raises, etc.)

The conventional approach to isolations is 12-20 reps and chasing that pump

But is this really optimal if you're trying to build up size/strength in those primary movers that will translate over to gains in your compound lifts?

Anybody ever try to keep their isolation work in a 5-8 rep range?

I was reading somewhere that Ben Wallace could allegedly curl 220 lbs.
